Latest Updates from Our Project:

Framing the Game
7 months ago – Thu, Oct 05, 2023 at 01:31:29 PM

Greetings, Skyrisers!

We're back with another brief update today to share the last element we're finalizing before finally hitting print and sending Skyrise off for mass production: The Island Frame!

Making sure this frame lays perfectly flat is critical, not only to make sure our city stays up in the clouds but also so that everyone can enjoy the perfect gameplay experience we've been working towards.

Let's take a glimpse at the photos:

In these photos, we're looking at injected plastic pieces without wash. We're in the fine-tuning phase with these molds, ensuring the pieces perform exactly how we want on the table.

To be clear: We are very close!

The final color of the frame will be a slightly darker color so that it's a closer match to the game board, while also being distinct from the grey buildings.

We're so close to the plastic finish line, and as we've said throughout this journey, Team Roxley endlessly appreciates your patience as we make the final changes before moving onwards to final print and production of this glorious game.

As always, we'll be watching for your observations and questions in the campaign comments. Look for our next update in two weeks' time, and until then...

Keep rollin' sixes!

Greetings, Skyrisers!

Thank you all for the outpouring of feedback from our previous update regarding the updated wash photos.

For additional context on the production status, please take a peek inside the current pre-production copies of both editions of Skyrise, thanks to a helpful video from our very own James!

Team Roxley at WSBG!

For the next few days, our team is attending the World Series of Board Gaming as both sponsors and tournament hosts. Competitors can peruse the exhibitor hall between tournament games, where Skyrise is on display!

If you have any questions about Skyrise or even the WSBG, please leave a comment on this update and we'll respond as quickly as possible. We'll be back with a fresh update in two weeks, and until then...

All About That Wash, Take 2
8 months ago – Wed, Sep 06, 2023 at 05:17:42 PM

Over the weekend, we’ve seen a deluge of concerned feedback regarding the photos of wash-applied buildings shared in last week’s update. We value every bit of feedback offered and want to respond to that feedback as quickly as possible.

Photo Clarification

First and foremost, let’s address the photos that were shared. In our rush to share the latest information, the update included images that were not intended for an update. They were primarily meant for internal purposes, and we made the mistake of rushing them out to backers. The white table used in the photos may have amplified the contrast of the pieces, making them appear quite different than they are in normal lighting conditions.

We'll share some higher-quality photos later in this update to assist in continuing this conversation with you, our valued backer community. We should also mention that we approved the colors that were shown to the backers on May 15th. We expected these latest samples to be an exact match to those approved colors, and they are in fact extremely close to a match, although the last set of photos we sent did not depict this very well for you. There are some differences which we did not expect, particularly with the patina (green) color that we are working with the factory to rectify.

Wash Technique

Let's dive into the specifics of this process:

The Shadow Effect: To create a sense of depth and shadow on our miniatures, the team at Eastar has leveraged their experience with creating "Sundrop" miniatures (Such as Awakened Realms minis, or Foundations of Rome) in order to create a wash effect for us that has very similar and equally stunning results.

Washes and Their Purpose: They are fundamental to the craft as they make game pieces darker and more weathered. This involves adding black and brown to a lighter color. When you introduce a darker color to a lighter substrate, it naturally becomes darker, but it also imparts the effect of realistic shadows and depth.

Pooling Explanation: You may have noticed some areas where the wash appears to pool on top of the buildings. This is due to the need for flat surfaces on top, which means they must sit upside down during the painting process. This pooling is inherent in achieving the desired effect and should not impact the overall quality or gameplay experience.

Updated Photos

As requested, the photos below are taken on the Skyrise board, with multiple colors sharing the space. And since so many have been comparing last week's photos to the ones from our May 15th update, we've also gone ahead and included the May 15th samples in the photos below.

Even under better lighting conditions, it's clear that the patina (teal) building building remains a challenge, as many of you have pointed out. This is a result of how the brown water wash color interacts with the teal color, so we need to compensate for that with the substrate pantone. We're taking steps to address this issue by contacting our manufacturer again. Our goal is to make the green buildings brighter, ensuring a more distinct contrast between each player's pieces.

We greatly appreciate your feedback, and we're thankful for your dedication to helping us improve the final product. We'll be back with another update in two weeks, keeping you informed about the progress of the remaining Skyrise package components. Please understand that it may take some extra time for the next batch of wash samples to be delivered as we continue improving the quality of our miniatures.

We’ll be back again soon, and until then…

All About That Wash!

Welcome back, Skyrisers!

Today's update contains one of the most anticipated reveals of the entire campaign. After months of revisions and waiting, we can finally share photos of the approved wash samples of the Skyrise buildings!

Please enjoy the following photos of each of the four player colors:

What's Next for Skyrise?

Now that these beauties have arrived, we are confirming the hopefully absolutely final samples of the game components, and then we are ready to print.

Skyrise has taken us longer than any other game we've ever done. The game design / development, product design, and even components have been complex and time-consuming to perfect. However, we are EXTREMELY happy that we've finally arrived at a place where we are genuinely proud of the game!

As we move through the next phase, Team Roxley will continue to post updates every two weeks so that you can see our manufacturing progress. It will feel great for our team to finally get this game out to backers and into the market!

As always, if you have any questions, please drop them in the comments of this update, and we'll respond as quickly as possible! Until next time...

No News is Good News!

Greetings, Skyrise Backers!

We're back with another Skyrise update, keeping with our planned two-week schedule. Team Roxley is recovering from the madness of Gen Con, where our Skyrise prototype was on display for the 80,000+ attendees to steal a peek at during the mega event!

As for the production progress of Skyrise, we don't have any groundbreaking announcements to share at this moment, but we're thrilled to report that everything is progressing smoothly as planned.

To keep the excitement up in the air, we're bringing back an excellent play-through video from the fine folks at Heavy Cardboard. Visit this link to check out their 4-player showdown back from when the campaign was flying high!

We'll be back in another two weeks, likely with more substantial news about the game's progress. In the meantime, if you have any burning questions for Team Roxley, please float them in the comments of this update!

Until next time...

Keep rollin' sixes!
